Suddenly on February 2, 2002, Linwood E. Lang lost his life in a tragic automobile accident in Windsor, North Carolina.
Linwood, who had been the North Carolina State Council President for 9 ½ years and was the heart and soul of the North Carolina State Council. Through his leadership the State Council grew and developed into the strong and active force it is today.
His love of veterans and his deep infectious laugh was the glue that bound the Vietnam Veterans of North Carolina together.
Born on July 6, 1948 in Kinston, North Carolina and educated in eastern North Carolina, he was a star football player for the Ayden High School. Following his graduation he enlisted in the United States Marine Corp in 1967. He was the last surviving member of the 3rd Force Recon, Tarzan Team.
When the National Vietnam Veterans of America, Inc. decided to hold their 10th National Convention in Greensboro, North Carolina last year, Linwood took on the task of being the host for this important event.
Because of his leadership and hard work, the 10th Convention became the most successful and well organized Convention in history.
Linwood is survived by one son, Kelly Lang, one daughter Michelle Mitchell, four grandchildren, his mother Mrs. Bernice Wiggins, a sister, and two brothers.
